Youth Sports Programs in Washington DC
Youth Sports Programs in Washington DC
As you might expect from a metropolitan area that spreads across more than 61 square miles and contains a population of more than 5.5 million people (the 7th largest metro area in the nation), Washington, D.C., has more youth sports programs available than a lot of cities have youths.
So, instead of trying to describe them all here, we’ve selected five to highlight. They are (in no particular order) Koa Sports, Maryland Academy of Youth Sports (MAYS), Maryland State Youth Soccer Association, Virginia Youth Soccer Association and West Kempsville Youth Athletics.
Koa Sports
On its website, Koa Sports lists its motto as, “Changing Kids' Lives Through Sports.” The primary ways Koa Sports accomplishes this include providing expert coaches for all of its programs, and in many cases they are former professional or collegiate athletes. Koa Sports maintains an extraordinary instructor-to-athlete ratio of typically 6 to 1.
Koa Sports is located at 6903 Rannoch Road in Bethesda, Md. In addition to their core programs listed below, Koa Sports offers After-School programs, Free Promo Day Clinics and Student Service Learning (assistant coaching, field improvements, flyer drops, etc.) opportunities.
Koa Sports' core programs:
- Baseball
- Basketball
- Softball
- Flag football
- Lacrosse
- Field hockey
- Strength & Conditioning
Maryland Academy of Youth Sports (MAYS)
At the Maryland Academy of Youth Sports (MAYS), boys’ basketball programs are the primary focus. It offers video training, multiple leagues, tournaments and more.
The boys’ basketball teams and programs at MAYS begin with the “7 to 8 Year Old” teams and cover a broad spectrum of ages and skill levels up to “14 & Under” teams.
MAYS’s home is located in the city of Glen Burnie, Md., in Anne Arundel County.
Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA)
The Maryland State Youth Soccer Association (MSYSA) functions as an administrator of youth soccer programs throughout the state of Maryland. It is committed to fostering positive sportsmanship and to increasing the state’s overall recognition of and familiarity with the game of soccer.
Through its affiliate program, MSYSA provides its players and its coaches with insurance coverage. Affiliates’ recreational teams can compete in the association’s myriad sanctioned leagues, and MSYSA features highly experienced professional soccer coaches and administrators.
MSYSA’s biggest claim to fame is its annual Maryland State Cup Championships, which is an integral piece of the U.S. Youth Soccer Association National Championship Series pie.
Home base for MSYSA is Millersville, Md.
Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA)
Serving the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of Virginia as a charitable, non-profit organization, the Virginia Youth Soccer Association (VYSA) is dedicated to the promotion of youth soccer programs in the region.
Recreation-level and travel team organizations can become members of VYSA through a process that is fundamentally simple and straightforward. For the specific details and requirements, check out VYSA’s website.
VYSA membership has significant benefits, including a simultaneous membership in the U.S. Youth Soccer Association, which sponsors youth soccer programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, serving more than 3 million players.
