Charles County Parks & Recreation

Southern Maryland is rich in history and well worth visiting for its local beauty and its many historical sites and famous landmarks. If one is visiting or merely interested in checking out what the area has to offer, they can find many excellent activities and locations sponsored by the Charles County Parks and Recreation Department.

For those who enjoy fitness and sports, there is a facility in Charles County to fit your needs. Popular activities include swimming, hiking, boating, equestrian activities, league sporting activities and great places to jog or walk your dog.

Parks

Charles County boasts over 15 parks with amenities ranging from hiking and boating at Friendship Farm Park to athletics and children’s play areas at Laurel Springs Regional Park. The more adventurous can head out to the Skatepark, while sporting enthusiasts of all types can play tennis, baseball or football on league-sanctioned fields at the Robert D. Stethem Memorial Sports Complex. There are plenty of hiking and biking options as well. Most notable of these is the new Indian Head Rail Trail, 13 miles of bike trails created out of an abandoned railroad corridor for bikers and hikers alike. For those who love the links, the White Plains Golf Course brings the feeling of a private golf club to a public course. No matter what your inclination for outdoor fun may be, Charles County Parks and Recreation has a park ready to fit your needs.

Outdoor Sports

Not only do the parks of Charles County offer facilities for the casual, drop-in player, but there are many official leagues, both for youth and adults in many different sports. For the kids, there are options for softball and baseball in addition to the Charles County Youth League. Beyond America’s favorite past-time there are the Waldorf Soccer Club and the Charles County Lacrosse Club. Finally for those more interested in the gridiron there is the Youth Tackle Football & Cheer leading Program. Here boys can play in seven regional association teams while the girls can cheer them on to victory.

Indoor Sports and Gymnastics

For lovers of indoor sports, Charles County is there for you!  There are multiple programs which cover the range of basketball, indoor soccer and volleyball. All of these sports include programs for youths as well as adults. Not only are there set leagues for players to join but programs to suit the needs of the casual, drop-in player as well.

In addition to sports, the Elite Gymnastics and Recreation Center is an area favorite. Here one will find a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to competition gymnastics, dancing, martial arts and even a pro shop. These facilities are geared towards children as well as adults and include a toddler gymnastics area for the littlest ones!  For those serious about their gymnastics, this facility provides the ten levels of the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic Program to help train our future Olympic athletes.

Equestrian Trails

For those wanting to take a relaxing ride, Charles County Parks and Recreation has venues for you and your equine partner. Both Maxwell Hall Park and Oak Ridge Park have scenic riding trails of different difficulty levels. In addition, Oak Ridge Park sports a show area available on a first come/first served basis which is available for special event rental.

Recreation Centers

In addition to the Elite Gymnastics and Recreation Center there is the Port Tobacco Recreation Center with Jazzercise programs plus basketball and volleyball areas. In partnership with the Clark County Public Schools, Charles County Parks and Recreation has eight recreation centers devoted to a variety of activities for children and adults. These activities include exercise programs, arts & crafts, dance lessons, summer camps, after-school programs, sports and community programs. Each year there are special events tailored to each rec center.

Trips and Tours

Charles County Parks and Recreation also works hard to promote trips and tours throughout Maryland and beyond. While most of the tours are geared to historic Maryland and our nation’s capital, there are trip packages to places such as California or the scenic Pacific Northwest. Further afield are trips overseas to the likes of the Tuscany region of Italy.

Whether it is in the pavilions of Gilbert Run Park or one of the playgrounds, amphitheaters or other area pavilions, you can be sure you’ll find a site to fit your special event needs.
